The bride’s inspiration

“Lots and lots of Pinterest Boards and big-time planners on Instagram! I follow too many wedding coordinators, haha. I knew I wanted a super moody and dark wedding because whites and blushes just aren't who I am. “

HER FAVORITE PART

“Taking a moment to hang back with Joshua once everyone headed to reception. It was nice to take a breather and reflect on just getting married! Plus, dancing our little toes off since were always the first to hit the dance floor at any wedding or event we attend. We love to have a good time! Our band was awesome and had everyone dancing all night long!”

Her Favorite Moment

“Walking Down the Isle - I'm not a very emotional person and most of the weekend felt like it was in fast motion but when I stepped to walk down the isle, it was like the wind got knocked out of me (in a good way) and for a moment time stood still and the gravity and meaning of the entire weekend hit me and it was the most powerful moment of the wedding for me.”

The Story of How they Met…

“I was filming a pilot for a reality TV show about the dating app, The League (thankfully this never aired). Technically, I was on a blind date on camera (but it wasn't with Ross). He just happened to be at the very bar witnessing this bad ("horrendous" - in his words) date on film.  He didn't have a chance to interrupt although he did some solid investigating and managed to track me down the very next day.  I politely ignored his requests but Ross was persistent.  After a few weeks of him casually asking me out, I finally gave it a shot.

Our first date was 14 hours long (a road trip up the coast of California) and really instantly ... I knew this was something special. For date two, we jetted off to LA for the weekend and by date three we were utterly in love.   Our relationship from the very beginning was filled with spontaneous travel, constant romance, and adventure.  It took a mere 8 months (and about 24 flights) with trips to Scotland, Montana, Montauk, LA, Austin, Detroit, Miami, Manhattan, Sarasota, Palm Springs, and Chicago before we got engaged in Australia.

I had joined Ross on one of his work trips.  Although I had grown quite accustomed to his spontaneity he surprised me one morning by hiring a seaplane to take us to a private island a short distance from Sydney. It felt like a scene out of Bond movie, we laid on the beach, drank rosé, watched giant lizards scurry by while eating grapes and taking turns jumping into the shark infested water (we found out about the sharks later). And although it was pure magic, I wasn't expecting it in the slightest when he dropped to one knee and proposed with a beautiful 1920's vintage emerald and diamond ring. “

the dress

“The hardest part about getting married for me was figuring out what to wear down the aisle.  This is especially tough when you are competing with a man in a Kilt.  Kilts are steeped in tradition and also happen to contain every single primary color.  Ross's custom kilt, made by an old kilt maker in Edinburgh, was no exception containing Green, Red, Blue, and Yellow.  So what in the world do I wear alongside that?

The only thing I knew is that I wanted an Israeli designer as I found them to be the best with beading and details, although I struggled to find a dress with the right balance of edge and class.  Kinsley James helped me land on the perfect Liz Martinez dress (I went to over 10 bridal boutiques including flying to Kleinfeld's in the hunt).  I worked with a local tailor to further customize it with an overskirt.  I am inspired by old Hollywood glam and was looking for something that would seem timeless yet showstopping at the same time.  I didn't want to be outdone by a kilt or lost in any of the grand Scottish locations.  I think it did the trick however, I still think Ross in his bespoke kilt and our 30+ American male guests who dawned traditional Highland dress really stole the show. ;)”

The Shannons Photography - Heather and William-542.jpg

“We met through work. We had both lived in LA for ten years but did not cross paths until we worked together. It was a whirlwind romance and I knew right away I wanted to be with him forever. You really know when you know!”

The Shannons Photography - Heather and William-279.jpg

advice from the bride:

“Firstly have a destination wedding hah! It allows you to elongate your wedding celebration! Visualize the entire flow of the day. Be as present as possible. Don’t spend your entire cocktail reception taking photos. Take a few moments with your new husband after the ceremony by yourself just to take it all in. It does fly by.”

“Do not save the ceremony and vows until the month of.  This is so special and a celebration of your love. We carefully chose the readings, and had several edits of our vows over the course of six months! I’m glad we did not wait until last minute.  We also learned a lot about each other during the process.”

The bride goes on to explain that her favorite part of her wedding was “Walking down aisle to the main title song from Ever After. “

The Bride’s inspiration:

“It took us nearly a year to decide where we wanted to get married! We agreed that we wanted to be in a pub one day (William is English) and when someone asked us where we got married, we could have a great answer. I just wanted a very romantic, dreamy setting.  I am obsessed with the French countryside, and my great grandparents are from France, so when William quit his job last fall we went on a month long road trip across France and looked at 15 different chateaus and found a beautiful one in the Dordogne region! I could swear that the clouds parted and the chateau appeared as we drove up to it. It was surreal.

I am inspired by art nouveau, fairy tales- mainly beauty and the beast,  and Chocolate and Ever After, my two favorite films that were set in the Dordogne region of France. I told my wedding planner I wanted an enchanting, whimsical fairy tale wedding with a subtle nod to beauty and the beast and pops of crimson and a lot of candles. I love vintage pieces and old books and keys. We used stacks of books and candlesticks running down a long table under fairy lights and a vintage skeleton key at every place setting with people’s names. My planner was so creative and made it look so authentic with these faded vintage gold ornate mirrors and antique finds, rather than cartoony. There were hints of fairy tales woven through the weekend. It all lended to the magic I wanted to manifest!“

The Love Story Continued

Following John's graduation, the two began to date more seriously, and on Ife's birthday, they became an item in Cozumel, Mexico. Ife and John have been inseparable since.  They've grown tremendously as individuals and even more as a unit. They've traveled abroad, ingratiated themselves with each other's families and friends, and have created so many lasting memories. The most recent memory came when John got down on one knee, willing to stain his trousers and crease his Ferragamo shoes, in order to propose. Ife, after having a hard time sitting on the park bench in order to hear John's proposal (because she had on white pants), said yes!

INSPIRATION FOR HER GOWN: A BRIDE WITH A VISION

“As far as my dress goes I knew I had to have something different that would stand out. I was thinking about a hi-low dress. I saw Whitney Port's a few years ago and still loved it to this day so I thought it might be fun and modern but had never tried one on so I wasn't sure what I would think. I could not find one anywhere but it was my mission to find one. About 150 dresses later, I finally found one but it was extremely plain and not what I was envisioning at all. I explained my vision of a hi-low dress with a dramatic train, covered in beading and different textures to KJ and they assured me that we could make it happen. And it turned out to be the most amazing dress I could have ever asked for.”

“I'm from Southern California so I've always been obsessed with palms and wanted a tropical vibe so my floral choice was clear to me. I didn't want any flowers, just tropical leaves of all kinds. My favorite flower is an orchid so my bouquet had strictly orchids and all sorts of tropical leaves. I knew I wanted a beach vibe but didn't want it to be extremely casual and hard for guests to move around in the sand so Huntington Bay Club was the perfect venue. It is in the most gorgeous building and prime location with it's own private beach into the Harbor.”

ADVICE FROM THE BRIDE:

I definitely think that a lot of brides try to be people-pleasers and accommodate everyone else. They make decisions based on the reactions or assumed reactions that they will get. But at the end of the day, it is YOUR day. Your one day to shine and have it perfectly the way you want it. So don't take into account everyone else's opinion (maybe your fiance too, haha). But always make decisions based on what you want to do, no one else's opinions matter on YOUR day!

words From the bride:

"Wedding planning is no piece of cake (although, at the end of it you do get one). The details surrounding a wedding are ever-changing but one thing remains constant: the dress. I wanted a dress that reflected my Palm Springs wedding: flirty, a little bit funky and a lot of fun! There are a few things about my Marchesa dress that sealed the deal. The applique detailing brought my dress to life and really took this dress from one dimensional to 3D. All superheroes need a cape, and this dress had one! I wore it during the ceremony and ended up shedding it during the night when my shoulders needed to shimmy. And finally, the dress was comfortable! I was able to have my cake and eat it too! "Funny enough, it was the first one I ever tried on.  As Alexia zipped me up in the fitting room, I fought back tears looking at myself in the mirror and then when I walked out to show my Mom and best friend, they both immediately began crying.  What I absolutely loved about my dress was the intricate lace details and how it was form fitting and also very lightweight, which was an important factor when getting married in outdoors in Maui. It was also important to me that my dress look glamorous and sexy, yet timeless and elegant. My Liancarlo dress is absolutely a piece of art and getting to work with the girls at Kinsley James was truly the most amazing experience I could ask for."

"My inspiration for our wedding was what I like to call 'tropical glam'.  I wanted to mix our love and adoration for Maui with my love for glamorous details. My now husband and I set out to create an intimate and elegant party, where we could share our favorite place in the world with the people that we love most.  My vision from the get go was to add beautiful touches to our stunning venue, yet to never compete with it's natural beauty.  I worked with a color palette of charcoal, grey, silver, white and added pops of blush and gold, which complimented all of the gorgeous foliage, palm trees and the ocean setting perfectly."

A word from the bride:

Early 2016, right after the proposal, we were in Charleston for our first time, and everywhere we turned would have been a dream wedding venue, expect we were on the wrong coast! Now try to find a colonial home in California, that’s a tough task! Paul found it though, McCormick Home Ranch, a little hidden gem tucked away in the middle of southern California. Just far enough away to be a destination, still close enough to feel like home.

#KJbride Jennifer wearing Liancarlo 6870 at her beautiful wedding in Healdsburg this September! The wedding had a chic but rustic barn feeling, which also looked out over beautiful vineyards. The floral color palette really brought the vibe to life, bringing in a darker shade of burgundy for the Fall wedding. View more photos and her vendors below!
